Ethics Resources
People and Plants seeks to reflect in its practices the values and principles it promotes through our work. We consciously build ethical procedures and mindfulness into our practices – ethical research design; meaningful consultations and prior informed consent (including templates for written consent when appropriate); knowledge sharing and exchange; the return of results, products and other benefits to communities; ethical image and filming practices; acknowledgement of all collaborators; and providing space within our team for review of these important issues, and development and improvement of our understanding and practices as we work together. As part of this approach, the team follows the International Society of Ethnobiology Code of Ethics and Research Guidelines. Additionally, we support the International Society of Ethnobiology’s Policy on the Use of Images.
Ethical filmmaking
People and Plants consults and draws upon material directed at ethics in video and filmmaking, and are compiling key resources to guide our team, including consent forms, codes of ethics, and academic articles and books that explore informed consent, acknowledgement of participants, and other aspects of ethical video production. We have also developed a template Prior Informed Consent form that is modified for each country and case.
The collection of Video Ethics Resources below have been compiled through the contributions of a range of collaborators, but are a work in progress. We welcome comments, additions, and feedback. The shorter, introductory list of ethics resources Getting Started is intended as a first step for those looking for general guidance. A longer and more comprehensive Video Resource Packet follows, and will continue to build through crowd-sourced contributions from around the world.
