Phase 3 of People and Plants
depends for its success on a core team, members of which provide expert guidance to the regional projects, drive the whole programme, and ensure that its various components are well integrated.
Members of the core team include officers in various WWF National Organisations and Programme Offices, and the UNESCO Nairobi Office. They include:
  • Ashiq Ahmad Khan, Chief Technical Advisor, WWF-Pakistan.
  • Dr Yildiz Aumeeruddy, who serves as Project Advisor for Nepal and is responsible for the ‘best practice’ work on conservation of Himalayan medicinal plants.
  • Rosalind Coles, Programme Support Officer, WWF-UK.
  • Dr Tony Cunningham, who is responsible for much of the ‘best practice’ work in the Multi-regional project and for laying the foundations of a new permanent institution for developing and promoting applied ethnobotany.
  • Alan Hamilton, WWF Programme Co-ordinator.
  • Dr Robert Höft (UNESCO), who leads the work in Kenya and Uganda and is responsible for publication arrangements at UNESCO, including production of Working Papers.
  • Yeshi Choden Lama, WWF Programme Office for Nepal.
  • Professor Pei Shengji, who serves as Project Advisor for Pakistan.
  • Susanne Schmitt, Assistant WWF Programme Co-ordinator and responsible, in particular, for co-ordination of a campaign to place wood-carvings from Kenya on a more sustainable basis.
  • Martin Walters, Editor, looks after the People & Plants publications and also maintains and updates the website.
  • The Global Diversity Foundation:
After being on the People and Plants team since 1992, Gary Martin's contract with WWF ended in 2000.
He has now started The Global Diversity Foundation(GDF), with the mission of "promoting agricultural, biological and cultural diversity around the world".
